If GoPro's Hero 3's price tag is a bit too tough for you to swallow, then you might want to look to repurposing your smartphone's camera. After all, many smartphones now capture exceptional full HD video, and the iPhone is probably one of the best in its class.
Lending a solid assist is Hitcase's just announced ChestR Mount. It's designed to work in tandem with their HitCase iPhone 4s case or Hitcase Pro iPhone 4s case. So you're in luck if you already own one of those. If not, you'll be shelling out a minimum of $130, or $180 if you opt for Hitcase's Pro version. Nevertheless, that's cheaper than a GoPro Hero 3 and there is nothing like having the video directly on your smartphone for easy and quick distribution.
That said, the ChestR mount is designed to easily adhere to your chest and features a fast mounting system that allows you to capture just about any angle you ski, pedal, or slide. I'm not sure what kind of damage your sternum and ribs would incur in the event you take a dinger, but at least you'll know what speed you ditch at since you can overlay that info on the captured video using their free app.
