Samsung Windows 8 PC Lineup Packs in Gesture Recognition and S Pen Support [hands-on]

Samsung has just unveiled their Windows 8 PC lineup, and they have certainly thrown in a few surprises.

For starters, their new Samsung Series 7 All-in-one not only takes design cues from their flagship ES8000 Smart TV, but it also has picked up a few tricks from its bigger brother. That is because the Series 7 AIO has support for hand gesture recognition. In addition, the display is also a LED touch screen, with an excellent 250 nit brightness and 1080P resolution that is worthy of its Samsung TV heritage. The Series 7 all-in-one will be available in a 27″ Core i7 model or a 23.6″ Core i5 model, with the 27″ model starting at $1699, and the 23.6″ model starting at $1099. And if you're looking for a more affordable All-in-one, the Samsung Series 5 all-in-one offers a 21.5″ display with a 1080P LED touchscreen and a Core i3 processor, all for $799.

Samsung has also introduced two new ATIV Smart PCs. These hybrid PCs both blur the line between tablet and laptop, with a detachable 11.6″ display that turns into a tablet. But that form-factor isn't the only thing impressive about these new Smart PCs, but the fact that they come with a Samsung S pen is quite sweet. That makes these both ideal for sketching, drawing and taking notes.

The Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T sports a 11.6″ LED display with SuperBright Plus technology and a 1080p resolution, and it runs on a Core i5 processor. Pricing for the 700T begins at $1199 and it weighs just 1.89lbs. And if you're looking for a more affordable alternative, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T offers a similar form-factor, but with less performance. That is because the 500T is running on an Atom Z2760 processor. Pricing for the 500T begins at $749. Also, the 500T packs a lower 1366×768 resolution, and 5 finger touch capabilities, as opposed to the 10 finger touch capabilities that can be found on the 700T. All of the new systems also come with AllShare support.

There is no question about it – whether they are bringing over design cues and technology from their Smart TVs, or from their Galaxy Note devices, Samsung has taken elements from their other successful products and integrated them into their Windows 8 line up. But what is perhaps most exciting about Samsung's new Windows 8 lineup is that features like S Pen, and the Samsung tablet form-factor is no longer limited to Android anymore. It's almost like it's finally ok to be a PC, without having to sacrifice much.
