Beats by Dr. Dre is no stranger to making Bluetooth speakers, but their latest wireless speaker is a pill you will want to pop. The Beats Pill is a portable Wireless speaker that measures just 45.72.mm x 190.50mm and weighs just .68lbs. So while it's not quite pocket friendly, it's small and light enough to throw in your bag.
The folks at Beats say that they have been working on this speaker for a few years, but there is no question about it, the Beats Pill is trying to compete with the popular Jawbone Jambox. As of late, more and more portable Bluetooth speakers have been coming out too, including the Jabra Solemate which we recently reviewed.
The Beats Pill doesn't just look neat, it's also been packaged with love. To that effect, the pill comes packaged like it's a giant sized pill! In the box you also get a form-fitting hard shell case with a carabiner to carry the Pill in, as well as a USB charging cable, an AC power adapter, and a 1.5 m audio cable.
Setting up the Beats Pill and pairing with your iPhone or other Bluetooth capable devices is easy. When powered on, the Beats Pill emits a power on sound and the Beats logo lights up, which is pretty neat. The Beats logo button is used for pairing, while the top of the device sports a set of volume control buttons.
Inside the Pill, Beats by Dr. Dre has managed to pack in a total of 4 speakers! The Pill also has support for aptX audio coding technology which is designed to deliver wired audio quality wirelessly. When it comes to music playing back on the Pill, the speaker really shines with its crisp vocals and sharp highs. It's also able to get really loud – enough to easily fill a room, and this is quite a feat for such a little guy. Unfortunately when it comes to bass, the Pill is pretty weak. We also noticed some distortion and popping at very high volumes.
Some other features of the beats Pill include NFC for tap to pair with smartphones, a 7 hour battery life, auto shut-off after 30 minutes of no signal detection in order to conserve battery life, and echo cancellation for call clarity and feedback control. Speaking of echo cancellation, the Pill works as a fine speakerphone. Callers heard me clearly and I heard them clearly too.
Verdict
As long as you can swallow the price tag, this is one Pill you should listen to the doctor and take. The Beats Pill comes in a choice of red, white or black and retails for $199.
The Good: Fun product. Great design, that is ergonomic and easy to hold. Comes with plenty of accessories, including a carrying case. Crazy powerful for such a little speaker. Shines on vocals and highs.
The Bad: Not the most rugged portable speaker out there, but the included carrying case makes up for that. Had some issues when pairing and often had to turn the Pill on and off. Bass is weak. Observed some distortion and popping at very high volumes.
