Four Flavored Butter Spoon

Butter! Better! And in four yummy flavors! The idea here is to package butter in a very convenient single-serve way. Since single serves are usually consumed during travel or picnics, this package includes a wooden spoon lid. The solid spoon is used to spread the butter and does away the need to carry additional cutlery. The idea seems neat and can be extended to yogurts and ice creams too. Although a safe plastic cover like seen in this package, is recommended.

The Sleep Cycle app is a sleeping aid for iOS devices and has been designed to measure your sleeping patterns, and analyzes the data to determine the best window of time for you to wake up. Now won't that be great.. hopefully it will choose sometime in the mid afternoon for me.

Sleep Cycle App

Its an alarm clock that analyses your sleep patterns and then wakes you when your in your lightest sleep phase. providing a natural way to wake up helping you feel rested and relaxed.

Sleep Cycle monitors your movement during sleep using the extremely sensitive accelerometer in your iPhone. Then finds the optimal time to wake you up during a 30 minute window that ends at your set alarm time. It also saves your sleep data and displays a detailed sleep graph and sleep statistics for every night you use it.

Download the Sleep Cycle App from iTunes for $0.99

Troika sent us documentation of Shoal, their newest public artwork for the Corus building in Queens Quay East on Toronto's Waterfront. 467 independent, iridescent objects that resemble fishing lures "liquify" the ceiling of a 50m long corridor, mimicking the interdependency patterns seen in schooling fish. According to Troika, this is meant to change "the spatial experience of the corridor while opening up the surrounding architecture infinitely towards Lake Ontario."

Portraits of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe made from dice

Some people like mini-golfing in their spare time, others engage in a match of ping pong. And then there are those that play dice. David Alvarez, a performance artist, takes the latter to a whole new level by using 14,000 die (dices?) to create portraits of James Dean and Marilyn Monroe.

Playing items seem to do it for him, somehow. He also has a project where he turns 336 Rubic Cubes, in different color settings, into an image of The Joker Another fantastic idea? A Jimi Hendrix portrait made from 8,568 playing cards. We wonder what's next? A portrait of Obama using 10,000 Scrabble tokens?

How to make recycled paper flowers

Sent to you by nunok via Google Reader:

via How About Orange by noreply@blogger.com (Jess) on 10/8/10

I learned to make these flowers a long time ago with directions from a library book. They don't require any adhesive, and there are just four shapes to cut out.

Use them to decorate gifts or make wreaths. I chopped up a fancy Urban Outfitters catalog for these.

You can make template pieces to trace around and then cut out the shapes with a scissors—what I used to do. But this seemed like a good test for the Silhouette cutter, so I recreated the pattern pieces in Illustrator and commanded the machine to cut them for me. It took about fifteen seconds to cut the parts for one flower. Whoa. I shall never return to my primitive, scissors-wielding caveman ways.

If you'd like to download the PDF templates, get the large flower here and the small flower here.

[Cutting from Adobe Illustrator with the Silhouette currently requires a free plug-in that works with Illustrator 10 - CS3. Apparently an update to the machine's Silhouette Studio software is coming out in November which will allow it to open .dxf files exported from Illustrator. No plug-in needed, in that case.]

To make the flowers, do the following:

1. Score the back of each petal along the lines shown in pencil, above.

2. Pleat the petals along the scored lines, always folding in the same direction.

3. Fold the triangle portion of the stem in half lengthwise. Do this two more times until it reminds you of a toothpick.

4. Using a chopstick or skewer, roll the "flag" portion of the stem toward the "toothpick." This curl will form the center of the flower.

5. Curl the ends of each petal backward to give them shape.

6. With a skewer or sharp pencil, poke a hole in the center of each flower piece.

7.Thread the pieces onto the stem, from smallest to largest. Finished!

Remember to toss your name in for the Silhouette giveaway, which is open until Monday night. Somebody's gotta win it. It might as well be you.
