ผมเป็นคนที่เดินทางไปเชียงใหม่บ่อยมาก ถ้าเป็นแต่ก่อนคงอยากหาที่พักแถวถนนช้างคลานใกล้ไนท์บาร์ซ่าร์ มาเดี๋ยวนี้ความเจริญมาย้ายมาอยู่ที่ถนนนิมมานเหมินทร์แล้ว ถ้าเป็นไปได้ก็จะเลือกที่พักในย่านนี้เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงการเดินทางไปไหนมาไหนไกลๆ เว้นแต่ต้องไปทำธุระชานเมือง หรือนอกเมือง เช่นหางดง แม่ริม แม่แจ่ม อะไรประมาณนี้

หาที่พักในเชียงใหม่จะว่ายากก็ยาก (สถานที่ถูกใจแต่ราคาอาจไม่ถูกใจโดยเฉพาะช่วงวันหยุดยาว) จะว่าง่ายก็ง่าย (มีที่พักให้เลือกทุกระดับประดับใจ ถ้าเปลี่ยนมาเที่ยวช่วงนอกเทศกาลหรือช่วงวันธรรมดา รับรองว่าหาไม่ยาก)

เมื่อปีที่แล้วผมมีโอกาสกลับไปเชียงใหม่อยู่หลายครั้ง แล้วก็ได้ค้นพบความเก๋ของโรงแรมนึงซึ่งตั้งอยู่บนถนนนิมมาน จากการค้นหาโรงแรมใน Agoda ที่มีโรงแรมให้เลือกประมาณ 500 กว่าๆ Nimman Mai Design Hotel (นิมมาน ไหม ดีไซน์ โฮเต็ล) เป็นโรงแรมเปิดใหม่ ตั้งอยู่ในซอยสุขเกษม เดินออกมาหน้าปากซอยจะเจอร้านกาแฟชื่อดัง Ristr8to โรงแรมส่วนใหญ่จะแบ่งเกรดของห้องพักตามขนาดและความหรูจาก Standard, Superior, Deluxe และ Suite แต่โรงแรมนี้มีมากกว่านั้นเพราะเขาแบ่งตามอารมณ์และรสนิยมการตกแต่งห้องเป็นถึง 7 ธีม ด้วยความสนใจที่มาและแรงบันดาลใจของที่มาในแต่ละห้อง ผมเลยย่องไปเก็บภาพและเรื่องราวมาเล่าสู่กันฟัง

Theme ที่ห้าจะออกแนวเซนชื่อว่า Zen Japan (The concept of the land of rising sun, that occurred to create the fastinating way of people, talent, life & tradition) เป็นห้องแนวเซนคือเน้นความเรียบง่ายและนิ่งสงบไม่ฉูดฉาด ห้องสไตล์นี้จะคงความคลาสิกและอยู่ได้นานกว่าห้องสไตล์อื่น

Theme ที่หกมีชื่อว่า Tribe Lanna (The concept of Serene, that occurred as magnificent heritage of Chiangmai's way of life) ห้องนี้ก็จะออกสไตล์เหนือหน่อย เพราะมีการใช้ไม้สาน วัสดุและศิลปะของล้านนาเข้ามาประกอบการตกแต่งภายในห้อง แต่ต้องระวังเรื่องมอดและการบำรุงรักษานิดหน่อย

Theme สุดท้ายคือ Thai Rattanakosin (The concept of Heaven that occurred as Thai murals of Nang Mekkala, a Goddess of Lightning) ห้องนี้แต่งขึ้นมาแล้วยังดูไม่ค่อยโดนเท่าไหร่ จะมีแค่ฝาผนังที่พยายามตกแต่งให้ดูเหมือนคุ้มเจ้า ถ้าใช้สีไม้ เฟอร์นิเจอร์ และแบบผ้าม่านจะดูลงตัวกว่านี้

คุณค่าที่คุณเลือกได้

โชคดีที่ผมมีโอกาสเข้าพักตั้งแต่โรงแรมเปิดใหม่ๆ ราคาต่อคืนตกประมาณ 1,200-1,500 บาท ตอนนี้เสิร์ชใน Agoda ราคารู้สึกจะขยับขึ้นมาเป็น 2,000-2,500 ต่อคืนแล้ว (มีคนเข้าไปรีวิวเกิน 400 แล้ว คะแนนอยู่ในระดับ 8/10 เข้าไปอ่านรายละเอียดและรีวิวจากคนที่เคยไปพักได้ที่นี่ครับ) ถ้าจะให้ชมโรงแรมนี้ผมคิดว่าเขาตอบโจทย์เรื่องความคุ้มค่า เพราะเทียบกับเงินที่เสียไป กับความรู้สึกแปลกใหม่ในการพักผ่อนอยู่ในธีมห้องที่สวยงาม แถมฟูกและผ้าปูที่นอนยังนุ่มสบายกว่าทุกที่ๆ เคยพักมา, มี iPad ตั้งให้ใช้บริการที่ Lobby หรือจะขอรหัส wifi ไปใช้ที่ห้องพักก็ได้ไม่คิดเงิน, แหล่งที่ตั้งก็สุดยอดมาก เดินทางไปไหนมาไหนสะดวกดี แต่สิ่งที่ยังต้องปรับปรุงคือ มาตรฐานการบริการที่สามารถพัฒนาให้ดูสากลขึ้นได้อีกตั้งแต่พนักงานต้อนรับ พนักงานในห้องอาหารและแม่บ้าน, ห้องนอนสวยแต่ห้องน้ำและข้าวของเครื่องใช้ในห้องน้ำยังดูดร็อปไปนิดนึง, ส่วนอาหารเช้าที่โรงแรมก็ดูธรรมดาเกินไป

จากโรงแรมที่เคยไปพักในย่านเดียวกัน ผมขอแนะนำเพิ่มอีก 2 โรงแรม

• At pingnakorn Hotel (โรงแรมบ้านพิงค์นคร) เป็นโรงแรมที่ตอบโจทย์เรื่องความสะอาด ราคา ไม่เน้นสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวก โดยเฉพาะอาหารเช้าที่กิ๊บเก๋กว่าใคร อร่อยมาก คอนเฟิร์ม
• Kantary Hills (โรงแรมแคนทารี ฮิลล์) เป็นโรงแรมแนว Executive Apartment ตอบโจทย์เรื่องสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกที่ครบครัน ในห้องนอนมีทั้งครัว เครื่องซักผ้า และไมโครเวฟ มีสระว่ายน้ำ ยิม ซาวน่า เลาน์จ ส่วนอาหารเช้าก็ครบเซ็ตมาก ที่ต่างจากที่อื่นคือเขามีเมนูอาหารญี่ปุ่นด้วย อีกหนึ่งข้อดีคือมันอยู่ใกล้ Warm Up มากๆ

Coffee bean roaster promises the freshest automatic home brew

This is part of a new series of articles that looks at entrepreneurs hoping to get their ideas off the ground through crowdfunding. At the time of writing, each of these innovations is currently seeking funding.

While some consumers may be swapping their morning brew for the Sprayable Energy's drink-less alternative, others still treasure the nuances of a freshly ground coffee. For coffee purists, Bonaverde is now offering a machine that turns unroasted beans into coffee at the push of a button, maximizing flavor while also delivering profits more directly from consumers to farmers.

According to the startup, even those who grind their own beans are consuming coffee that has gone through 17 stages of production — from farmer, to roaster, to packager, to distributer, to retailer, and all the steps in between — totaling an average of six months before it arrives in their kitchen. By this time, the flavor can be significantly diminished. The Bonaverde machine takes raw, green coffee beans, which are placed into a compartment on the top before the user sets the roasting level. The team has spent two years researching the perfect roasting temperature and time to get the best taste out of the beans. Once the beans have cracked they are automatically cooled and ground ready for brewing. The whole process takes just over ten minutes and one push of a button to turn the green coffee beans into the drinkable final product.

As well as giving consumers coffee that's much fresher than supermarket packets, the machine gets users to buy the raw beans direct from farmers, meaning that workers get a much fairer deal. The video below explains more about the project:

The Bonaverde Kickstarter has already broken its target by more than three times, but backers can pledge from USD 250 before 8 December to get their hands on a machine. Are there other products whose preparation process could be handed over to the consumer to cut middleman costs?

I can't believe that it's nearly Thanksgiving! Too soon, too soon! Fortunately these DIY Thanksgiving Luminaries are a quick project that you can complete during a crafty afternoon…and then you'll be able to check "feast table decor" off of your to-do list! Hooray! Let's make some luminaries shall we?!

DIY Thanksgiving Luminaries How-to:

Gather your supplies. You will need:

• Free Thanksgiving Luminary Printable | Printed onto standard copy paper
• Translucent Vellum Tracing Paper | Available in craft stores
• Paper Cutting Scissors
• Glue Stick
• Pencil
• Scrap paper
• Ruler
• Battery Operated Tealight Candles | Do not use flame candles with this project
• Glitter (optional)
• Craft Glue – such as Elmer's brand (optional)

Download and print your luminary designs onto standard copy paper. Place your ruler along the grey guidelines shown on the outer edges of the page. Use a pencil to lightly mark a straight line across the printed design. Avoid marking through any portion of the birds in the design (see image on right).

Cut out along the straight side and base edges of the printed design, and then along your straight pencil lines and around the bird illustration. Next, place your cutout on top of a piece of scrap paper and apply glue (glue stick) to the back of the design, taking special care to apply glue onto the outer edges of the design. Place glued side of design down onto a piece of vellum paper, lining the base of your design up with at least one straight edge of the vellum. Use your fingers to smooth and adhere the two paper layers together.

Use a ruler and pencil to determine and lightly mark guidelines for the height of your luminaries. I made my small luminaries 4.5″ tall, but you can choose any height that you'd like. Cut out design along your pencil guidelines.

Help give your luminary shape by gently rolling it up for moment. Finally, apply glue (glue stick) to the inner edge of one end of your luminary design. Roll paper and place glued edge atop the other edge to adhere. You may need to hold the edges in place for a few seconds to help the glue set. Repeat with as many luminaries as you'd like and finish by placing a battery-operated tealight inside.

For the larger turkey luminary, follow the basic luminary steps above, but increase the height of the vellum paper for a taller finished design.

Optional: You can add a bit of sparkle to your luminaries by applying a fine bead of glue (such as Elmer's brand) along the upper edge of your luminary and then sprinkling it with the glitter of your choosing.
